FAQs About Our Program and How We Place Puppies.
Do you have a waitlist?
We do keep an informal wait list. With infrequent litters, a formal waitlist has not become necessary for us yet. We will start waitlists once we have confirmed breeding plans. If you are interested in an Astyanax Poodle, once puppies are born we will begin accepting applications and one your application is approved we will accept deposits.
Do I get to pick my puppy?
We prioritize finding the perfect match between each puppy and their new family. We carefully consider the temperament of each puppy alongside the preferences of every family. Rather than a first-come, first-served approach, we focus on ensuring that each puppy is placed in a home where they thrive. If a family has several puppies that match their needs, they will have to choose from those options, ensuring a harmonious fit for everyone involved. We do try to match color and sex option but temperament is our first priority.
How do you place puppies?
We start by evaluating everyones puppy application, so we have a baseline of each family's wants and needs in a puppy. Once we get your application and your approved, we will continue communicating to get to know one another, so we have a full picture of what you need, and you get comfortable with us! As puppies begin to move around and develop personalities we begin taking notes on every puppy. We then have our puppies structural evaluations and temperament testing done, and after breeder pick/s are made, we will begin matching families to their puppies. We take names down in deposit order, but that is only put in use if there are multiple puppies that will fit one family, that family will then be able to pick from those puppies. If you are an active family, we will set you up with an active, rough, and tumble puppy. If you need a couch potato pet who just wants to cuddle, we will set you up with the cuddliest one of the bunch.
How do you choose a breeding?
All of our breedings are purposefully produced. That means that we invest a lot of time and research into any potential breedings we consider. We look at all aspects of both the sire and dam and what they bring to the breed. First, we look at our potential momma and pick apart her structure. Then we dig into her pedigree, take all of her health testing results, her temperament, coat type, and genetics, and then start the search for a male that compliments her in all aspects. For example, if the potential mom has a straighter rear, we want a boy with a nice and well-angulated rear. We look for boys with excellent Poodley temperament, health testing, correct breed type and structure, and a boy that compliments my girls. We make an effort not to breed to dogs that will take away from the attributes my girls have. Overall, we focus on breeding healthy and stable tempered puppies for the next generation.
What happens when my puppy comes home?
Well, you have a new family member!! You can reach out to us to answer any and all questions you may have. We have a closed Facebook group for all Astyanax family members to have a place to meet extended family and share pictures, stories, and bounce ideas off each other. Not everyone is on Facebook, so please know my email and phone number are always open. These puppies are loved long before they are born and we want the absolute best for them and for their family! We will always take my puppies back no matter what age they are or whatever reason you may have. These dogs will never end up in a shelter or rescue, so please never feel bad if your situation changes. We can always figure something out. Your puppy is your puppy, and we are your source of support!
